This PHILIPS SBC 1849 10-digit
scientific calculator has all the basic scientific and statistical functions
and is keystroke programmable using the
LRN function.
Once entered a program can be executed by
pressing the COMP key.
It has two separate power-off functions. Press OFF to switch the calculator off the normal way (but memory and the current program are retained), or use OFF B to switch the calculator off remembering the current ongoing operation. For instance, type 5 × 6 OFF B and take a lunch break. Come back, press the ON/C button followed by pressing = to obtain the result "30". I never knew there was demand for such a functionality. The same goes for the screen which is for reasons unknown tiltable. The screen can be read with ease because the digits are nicely big. A nice feature is how parenthesis are implemented. They can go up to 8 levels deep (depending on the calculation) and when typing ( multiple times during a calculation the current level is displayed by a row of "(" symbols. As it uses a 2-digit exponent the biggest factorial it can calculate is 69!. Fun fact: it takes a long time to error out on factorials of 70 up to 99. The factorial of 100 errors out immediately. It is probably easier to check for numbers greater or equal than 100 than it is to check for numbers greater than 69. For those wanting to replace the battery, it is located in the bottom part of the calculator. Two small phillips screws need to be removed. |
